Governor Brownback, Kansas Department of Commerce (KDOC), Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council (KITCC) and the Kansas Business Hall of Fame (KBHF) annually designates June as Business Appreciation Month. All businesses are honored and recognized with an emphasis on “Basic” businesses, which are generally those businesses with the vast majority of their sales outside their community’s trade area.
Each year a statewide awards banquet is held to honor those businesses. This year the Business Appreciation Banquet will be on June 22, 2016 at Washburn University. At the banquet there are four awards – Governor’s Award of Excellence, Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award, the Kansas Business Hall of Fame Award and the TEAM Kansas Silver Stirrup Award.
In the past, the Emporia area has had various companies and individuals receive awards. Past recipients of the Governor’s Exporter of the Year Award are VEKTEK (2015), Glendo Corporation (1998) and Didde Web Press Corporation (1991). It should be noted that Hill’s Pet Nutrition received the award in 1995, which today has operations in Emporia. Emporia State University and Dr. Raffeale DeVito are the founding members of the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council and for the past twenty years has coordinated the Exporter award.
The Kansas Business Hall of Fame (KBHF) is located at the Emporia State University School of Business. Contemporary and Historical Heritage Awards have been presented for the past 27 years. Currently I serve as President on the KBHF Board of Directors, which is a great honor and privilege to be part of the awards ceremony each year. Past Contemporary recipients from our area is Richard K. Davidson, past President of Union Pacific Railroad, who grew up in Reading, Kansas. William Allen White is a Historical Heritage award recipient.
A past recipient of the Governor’s Award of Excellence is B&W Trailer Hitches of Humboldt, Kansas in 2013. Joe Works, owner of the company has an affiliation with a business in Emporia and works closely with the Flint Hills Technical College Welding program.
The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is celebrating 90 years of the professional economic developers association. IEDC has asked the RDA, which is an IEDC member to celebrate the “Year of the Economic Developer”. The RDA is hosting a Business Appreciation dinner on June 23rd to thank those “Basic” businesses for bringing new wealth to the community through payrolls, full-time jobs, locally purchased goods and services and being good corporate citizens.
The point of this newsletter is that Emporia’s businesses strive to be the best. Four Emporia businesses were Exporter of the Year. Hostess Brands and Simmons commonly refer to their Emporia operations are their “flagship” plant.
Most recently Fanestil owners Dan and Jan Smoots were recognized as the Small Business Administration Wichita District Business Persons of the Year.
Wayne Symmonds, President of Frontier Financial Partners, a certified development corporation which assists small businesses with 504 SBA loans was recognized as CDC partnerships award.
We are proud of our Emporia area businesses and the people associated with those businesses.
